Five reasons why women should fish

Because we can.

Seriously, though, movies since the dawning of filmmaking in Hollywood have produced films like “Grumpy Old Men” to “A River Runs Through It” all focusing on the male fishing stereotypes that have men leaving the little mama to enjoy this masculine pastime.

In recent years there has been a rise in fishing permits sold to women showing an increased interest in the sport. Why not? The sport can have real physical and emotional benefits. Due to the rise in demand companies are making female specific gear that has never been made in the past. Why Women Should Fish, Rhonda Massad, Montreal Grandma, Montreal

My father used to take my brother and I fishing in the summer months. It was our quality time together before the quality time trend even started. The lake was smooth as glass at the wee hours of 5 a.m. We would creep out of the house as quiet as could be. I could put my own worm on the hook and “prepare” my catch for cooking when we came home a few hours later. I enjoyed this special time with my Dad and my brother, so I am not surprised at the trend towards women fishing today.

There’s no better time than the present for women to join their male counterparts on the water, shore or bank. If you need a little more convincing, consider these reasons to get outside and cast your first line.

To Get Away From It All

All fishing trips involve nature, water, and silence. The perfect place to relax and get away from the stresses of life at work. Most fishing spots are removed from the hustle and bustle of city and work life making it a solid place to connect with Mother Nature and your inner quiet.

Connecting With Family and Friends

Grab a loved one and head out. Grab your grandchildren! No cel phones, no technology, just time with one or more friends enjoying the quiet. From catching up between bites to selfies with your prize catch, your time spent together will turn into memories that last a lifetime.

Eating Healthy

There is nothing like eating fresh produce from a local market. Fishing is Mother Nature’s fish market. Contrary to picking up your fish at the grocery store, fresh fish is guaranteed organic. There is no middleman between you and your dinner.

While I am a catch and release kind of gal, catching your own fish is a great way to fill your diet with healthy, organic and sustainable food. Fish is one of the best sources of heart-friendly omega-3 fatty acids.

The Thrill

There is nothing more startling and more invigorating than the tug of having a fish on your line. First the little nibble, followed by the pull of the fish connecting with the line. For that instant it no longer matters the size of the fish; it just matters that it is happening. Landing that big catch just adds to the excitement and adrenaline. If you are looking for some serious excitement try deep sea fishing. Typically the bigger the fish the harder they are to catch.

I am happy with my routine of catch and release in the Laurentians. It is good clean fun.

To Dispell Gender Stereotypes

Do it for the girls! It is time to reverse this stereotype. TV shows, joke, and movies display men escaping their female counterparts by taking to the water with a rod and reel.

Even the word Fisherman excludes us. Along with the health benefits similar to meditation, it is time to stop seeing fishing as a man only sport.

So grab your rods and reels, some bait and head out because there is not reason not to.
