Just for laughs is great for kids as well as Grands

From a grandmother’s perspective, the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal is a great way to enjoy a summer evening in the city with your grandkids. There is enough going on for free that you can give it a try without much to lose. This year the festival goes from July 13 to August 1.

Sainte-Catherine Street in front of Place Des Arts is where all the action is. More than 50 food vendors, either trucks or kiosks fill the streets. There is something for the pickiest of tastes. From chicken nuggets at Benny’s to Vegetarian delights at the Green Panther food trucks, you really can feed your whole crew. Plenty of free entertainment make the atmosphere fun and stimulating for even the little ones. There are clowns, funny characters, and plenty of colorful things to look at. There are candy kiosks and several spots to get cotton candy freshly spun. Queues de Castor and Mr. Puffs make sure your carb intake is as high as possible.

I recommend a few things before venturing out:

  1. Wear comfortable shoes: I know this seems obvious, but I wore simple flat leather sandals but would have been better served in a sports sandal.
  2. Sunscreen and sunglasses: it can get hot and sunny so protect yourself and your munchkins
  3. Come with an empty stomach: there is so much to choose from you want to be able to try as much as you can.
  4. Take it slow: keep your portions small and take your time. Children tend to get excited, eat too much, and there goes the fun.
  5. Designate a place to meet if you get lost. It is much easier to plan ahead with a spot to meet in the event your group gets separated.
  6. Enjoy the free stuff: if you are not a regular at the festival just enjoy the free stuff for the first time. There is an extensive list of shows to attend, the best shows sell out early on.
